Of the 11 games that the Kansas City Chiefs have played in the 2024 regular season, eight have been decided by one score (eight points or fewer). The Chiefs have practically defied logic by winning all eight of those one-score games — a phenomenon that is normally unsustainable. But in Kansas City‘s case, it’s a feature, not a bug, relative to the way the Chiefs play.
However, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid reasonably fear that at some point, the Chiefs’ wellspring of good fortune will run dry. Kansas City’s defense is not quite the same elite unit as it was a season ago; Mahomes has improved of late but is still on track to set a new career-worst in interceptions over a single season. As a momentous Black Friday showdown with the rival Las Vegas Raiders looms, the Chiefs will be relieved to welcome back a high-level contributor who will help them improve in all facets.

Reid on Wednesday said that barring a setback, running back Isiah Pacheco will return to the Chiefs’ line up on Friday at Arrowhead Stadium, where the hosts will try to move a step closer to their ninth successive AFC West division title.

Pacheco suffered a broken ankle during the Chiefs’ Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals; Friday’s game will mark his first NFL action in over two months. The former seventh-round pick — another gem unearthed by Chiefs general manager Brett Veach — has been Kansas City’s top rusher the past two seasons and racked up nearly 1,200 yards from scrimmage in 2023, helping the Chiefs win a second consecutive Super Bowl. Pacheco was on pace for an even-better season in 2024 before the unfortunate leg break.
But Pacheco is set to return just in time for the most important part of the season. With six regular-season games to go, Pacheco will have a few weeks to get back up to game speed before the playoffs begin in January — when the Chiefs will take aim at NFL history and attempt to win their third Super Bowl title in a row.
